This lecture will consist of a recap of the most recent America’s Cup matches that took place in Bermuda during the summer of 2017, and a preview of the next America’s Cup match that is scheduled to take place in Auckland, New Zealand in February and March of 2021.  Three summers ago, the challenger Emirates Team New Zealand dominated the American defender, Oracle Team USA, to win the oldest trophy in sports.  This presentation will illuminate the how’s and why’s behind Team New Zealand’s success, and a review of the the video from these races will also provide a platform for discussion and analysis of some of the rules and tactics that are unique to this type of match racing.  The evening will conclude with a preview of next year’s America’s Cup matches, as Emirates Team New Zealand attempts to successfully defend the America’s Cup trophy against challengers from Italy, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

Event Information: Don’t know how to sail? Come join us! Our Ground School lesson is an introductory and informational course about the Hoofer Sailing Club and all it has to offer. No membership is required to sign up for this course, though one can be purchased afterwards for access to all lessons. 

About the Club: The Hoofer Sailing Club, established in 1939, is a collection of students and community members working together to maintain a fleet of boats for recreational and competitive sailing. Membership includes unlimited lessons and boat usage. Our fleet, one of the largest in the nation, includes dinghies, keelboats, windsurfing and even winter kiting. The Hoofer Sailing Club is an association of individuals working together to maintain a fleet of boats for recreational and competitive sailing, and to offer a top-notch instruction program. Come along for the ride aboard a 60ft racing machine with the Thunderstruck’s record shattering 2020 Hook Race. Sailing Program Manager David Elsmo will go through the process of owner Rick Hennig’s decision to purchase and refit a retired race boat through to shattering a 33 year old course record on the team’s first sail. Join us as we walk through some video taken during the race, our decision making processes as well as the weather that helped pushed the 18-person crew across the finish line in record time.

In this presentation we will be talking through the process of hull and bottom preparation for the sailing season. We will be covering everything from sanding and antifouling preparation through to refurbishing a gelcoat to a perfect finish! These skills will be handy for any Hoofer sailors and can help increase the longevity of all boats!
